The studio's task was to design a new building, which would allow the service city around the airport to expand, absorbing passenger flows and preparing the airport for future growth. The new, curved volume connects with the existing Terminal 2, with two piers providing parking positions for arriving and departing airplanes. The northern side of the first pier is equipped with eight docking positions for short- and mid-distance planes, and the northern side with nine, one of them dimensioned to accommodate larger planes such as the Airbus A380.
The corresponding terminal has a floor area of 76,000 square metres, and houses 72 check-in counters, shops and lounges. It also features access to parking and the underground train station. The project can be expanded in the future by a northern pier.
Baumschlager Eberle created an open structure where flexibility and neutrality are guiding principles. The terminal and the pier are composed of seven and ten equal parts, respectively. The building's roof assumes protagonism both in terms of design and of logistics, spanning the entire terminal and turns it into a consistent unit.
