London based designer and artist Marcin Rusak recently presented a new body of work based on a specially developed ageing material. Flora is made from natural flowers encapsulated in resin. The Flora furniture collection is the outcome of two years researching the potential of using flowers, a fleeting source of beauty, in creating durable, valuable goods that engage Rusak’s dual interests of natural aesthetics and material significance.

The tests led to two avenues: one stable and permanent, Flora Perma, and another, Flora Temporaria which, as it ages, will evolve and transform visually over time while maintaining structural integrity. The main component is flowers, which once unwanted and discarded, now processed and treated - turn into almost life like tissue. The decoration is not interpreted but comes from nature itself. Here, flowers are “frozen in time” and machined in order to reveal the complex and intricate beauty found in the cross section of flowers, the curve of petals, and the structure of leaves. Contrasted with black resin they appear as veins or fossils creating an almost stone like quality.
