For the SS/17 season, & Other Stories introduces a new co-lab collection created by Shoplifter – a NYC-based visual artist known for her artwork with synthetic and human hair such as braided murals and tufted hair in multi-coloured mossy pieces. The majority of her work can be defined as textile pieces or fiber art, which made it natural to translate her vision in a fashion context. The upcoming collection includes ready-to-wear, accessories, jewellery and make-up that encourage a style filled with playfulness and humor, exploring comfort zones and elevating moods.

Icelandic Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir a.k.a. Shoplifter is a visual artist that currently resides in New York. & Other Stories has followed her work for a long time and dreamt about bringing her vivid visuals into their world. For the SS/17 season that dream came true and resulted in a co-lab collection based on signature artwork from the past 20 years of her art career. “I wanted this collection to be colourful, playful, humorous and super comfortable. Surface and texture are the focal point, and simple shapes have a casualness to them that can be mixed and matched depending on your mood. Everything in this collection can be paired with staples in your closet to make them pop whenever you want to stand out,” says Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir.

Shoplifter’s unusual moniker is the result of a pronunciation gone wrong during her first months living in New York. A stranger struggling in all earnest to repeat back the native Valkyrie name, Hrafnhildur, resulted in an awkward and hesitant, “Nice to meet you, Ss.hop...l.l..l.i.ft..er?,” that sent everyone into a fit of laughter. Years later, with her Icelandic name proving to be near impossible to pronounce outside of Iceland, therefore hard to remember, her alter ego, Shoplifter has stuck.

Shoplifter has worked for several years exploring the use and symbolic nature of hair, and its visual and artistic potential. For Shoplifter hair is the ultimate thread that grows from our body. Hair is an original, creative fiber, a way for people to distinguish themselves as individuals, and often an art form. Her artwork has been exhibited worldwide in galleries and museums including MoMA in New York.

This co-lab collection transforms Shoplifter’s visual artwork into wearables. Furry characters are turned into bags and appliques, and her versions of braided and tufted synthetic hair have become prints in pink, blue, purple, turquoise and green, decorating an anorak, sweaters, dresses, trousers, scarfs and caps. Jewellery in gold and silver colours reflect the rawness found in some of her art pieces, telling a story of the overwhelming forces in nature. The make-up selection features an eye colour palette that is true to the palette of the garments, and five different nail colours with special textures and fibers, giving unusual effects to explore when creating your manicure.

& Other Stories’ co-labs complement the existing collections with their different and strong characteristics and expertise. By working with a mix of both new and more established talents it adds to & Other Stories’ selection and becomes a surprising element for the customers. The Shoplifter co-lab collection will be available in selected & Other Stories’ stores and on stories.com during spring, 2017.
