Upcycle: Phoenix chair

In antique mythology Phoenix was the bird that kept on rising from its own ashes, the same way Luca Nichetto imagines a chair for Offecct that always reinvents itself.

The Bukowski gallery in Stockholm presented the Phoenix chair by Luca Nichetto, as part of the latest collection launched by Offecct at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. The chair represents the Lifecircle philosophy by the Swedish company, where before launching any new collection the designs must be conceived for a long, sustainable and flexible life cycle.

Derived from a recycled aluminum frame with a trademark Y-shaped base, Phoenix represents an upcycle approach, with its upholstered parts that can be easily removed, reused and replaced when needed, or when the client wants to change colors or materials. This perpetual life cycle inspired the chair’s name: in antique mythology Phoenix was the bird that kept on rising from its own ashes. “The original idea comes from the Y-shape in the rope or chain in a children’s swing. Without the legs, the chair is actually like a swing”, explains Nichetto.

Phoenix comes with four different leg bases. The frame is available in a wide range of colors and different finishes, and the exchangeable wooden upholstered sections are available in a broad spectrum of materials and colors. In an early phase of development, Offecct and Luca Nichetto considered the option of constructing the frame out of wood, before settling on recycled aluminum, considered to be one of the most environmentally sustainable materials available for the purpose. The four different leg structures target different markets, from heavy contract to domestic.
