Muon

With two maxi speakers, 2 meters high, in between sound and sculpture, Ross Lovegrove interpreted KEF’s philosophy at Milan Show Superdesign. #MDW2016

English brand KEF partecipated for the first time to this year’s SuperDesign Show in Milan, with a stand designed by Michael Young. Among the new products we find Muon, two aluminium speakers designed by Ross Lovegrove.

The sculptural 21st century totem created by Ross Lovegrove, and showcased at the Fuorisalone 2016 delivers a huge, spatially precise stereo image of particular clarity and depth. A four-way design, the quartet of powerful bass drivers at the front supplement Uni-Q array that delivers natural upper mid-range and treble response. The ensemble is meticulously optimised to eliminate interference and distortion effects.

The LF section, which decreases group delay between 50 and 200 Hz, noticeably improves bass tightness and precision. This potent bass response is extended still further by Acoustic Compliance Enhancement, a KEF technology that uses granules of activated carbon to almost double the available volume through adsorption, thereby maximising dynamic performance while eliminating distortion. It allows the Muon to achieve a loudspeaker that can reach right down to 20Hz (the deepest the ear can hear) without recourse to active subwoofers, equalization, powered bass drivers or any other audiophile short cuts.

The two additional bass drivers mounted in the back of Muon also contribute to the clean, open sound by reducing reverberation and controlling how the sound waves radiate around the room. Internally braced and heavily damped, the Muon’s thick 6 mm superformed aluminium enclosure provides a totally rigid, acoustically inert structure that minimises any sound-distorting vibrations.
