Best of #Salone2016

A week after an edition considered a smash hit, we’ve put together our picks of the Salone, condensed in 10 interviews and a selection of the best designs, objects, installations and events. #MDW2016

For this year’s Salone special report, we asked Chiara Alessi, Domitilla Dardi and Maria Cristina Didero to interview ten Italian designers who recounted their new projects and their view of design and its processes.

– From artistic direction at BottegaNove to personal projects for her brand Attico, Cristina Celestino explains how she creates a dialogue between  artisan skills and contemporary vision.

– Interview with Lorenzo Damiani, the designer who makes marble flexible, creates objects from piles of stones and takes a metal sheet to the very limits of its possibilities. Not to create an unexpected effect, but always guided by importance on sustainability and economy of form.

– Partners in both their professional and private lives, Livia Rossi and Gianluca Giabardo – Dossofiorito – use design to show a different angle and narrate aspects of everyday life. They tell Domus about their Design Week, the Airbnb installation and the new self-produced Batches line.

– The most open and personal interview of this Salone was “coerced” from Odo Fioravanti. A lone voice that always has lots of interesting things to say, Fioravanti talks not just about design but about envy, social media and the “challenge of another chair”.

– Pure designers with little time for self-production, GamFratesi explain their installation at the Istituto Filologico centred on how a project takes shape in the artist’s mind.

– Two companies and more than 60 products in six months. With enthusiasm and passion, Stefano Giovannoni recounts the new and engrossing adventure of his new business model Qeeboo and the art direction for Ghidini 1961, which is preparing to become a leader in the brass design sector.

– From the secret of his work, that involves “making small advances, rethinking, tearing up, restitching, starting again” to the latest designs for Alessi, Internoitaliano and WoodyZoody. Giulio Iacchetti, “industrial designer since 1992” talks about himself.

– A new washbasin for Azzurra, re-branding for Linvisibile, a project for Artigo, a new series for Plust and a wooden rocket for Woody Zoody. Matteo Ragni explains his designs for Design Week and his work method of creating virtuous circles with the design partners of a lifetime.

Vittorio Venezia, the enfant prodige of the SaloneSatellite 2015, present himself this year as an outsider with an innovative work on Caltagirone and a series of lamps for LUCE5.

– Again this year a precise sense of place and durability emerge from Zanellato and Bortotto’s proposals at the Salone. Such as the rug Arengario for Cappellini and furniture made for Nilufar.
