A jury of international experts selected Anastasia Ax from the five contemporary artists who had been proposed. Ax, who was born in 1979 in Stockholm, now lives and works in Athens and Stockholm. She was nominated by Daniel Birnbaum, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, the other nominees were Ed Atkins, London, Ulla von Brandenburg, Paris, Aleksandra Chaushova, Bruxelles, and Julia Haller, Wien.
Anastasia Ax uses paper and ink, traditional materials of drawing, in an unexpected and impressive way. Ax deploys these materials to create imposing sculptural, even architectural works, in which she commits herself physically through performance and an explosion of energy. Bales of recycled paper have been temporarily removed from the economic cycle to provide the material for the installation and performance. Her use of paper in this way temporarily transforms waste into a platform for meaning. With many layers of references, including action painting and calligraphy, Ax’ artistic position opens up many possibilities for the future development of the Prize.
