Copper ID: Topaz

#36 The australian Copper ID design firm presents Topaz, a modular lamp series inspired by the geometry of the mineral crystallisations. #salone2015

Topaz, a modular lighting range that includes a pendant, wall sconce and table lamp, are a certified Australian made and designed product.
The Topaz pay homage to the exquisite geometric chaos that are Nature’s mineral crystallisations. The word topaz has a literal meaning of “amber quartz”, which was an inspiration behind the lamp’s creation. The seemingly random yet precise formations of crystal have been translated into an illuminated asymmetrical sculpture that looks unique from every viewing angle.

Each Topaz, when grouped in a cluster can be positioned at slightly different angles of rotation, and therefore appear to be a group of different shaped pendants. These direct/atmospheric pendant lamps are cut from 1mm sheet brass offcuts, reclaimed from a local non-ferrous metal yard, and are shipped flat, easily bent into shape by the owner. Shipping around the world is expensive from Australia, as is the cost to the environment when shipping empty space, so I strive to design flat packable products. The outside of the brass shade is radial polished or finished in a black bronzing process developed in Richmond, Australia with a local metal bronzer for the Topaz alone. This gives a striking contrast to the inside of the shade, which is left a raw, reflective brass, providing warm amber light that emanates from the cracks and floods the area below.
