Naomi Paul: Light / Shade

British emerging designer Naomi Paul presents at 100% Design the first three pieces in her new crocheted lighting collection Light/Shade.

Following the OMI Pendant, Naomi Paul launches at London Design Festival the first three pieces in her new lighting collection Light/Shade.

The silhouette of Gluck pendant design has evolved, making way for V2 Gluck pendant, an open shade with direct light source. When lit, the characteristic openwork of the handcrafted crocheted surface gives the entire shade an effervescent glow ideal for dining tables and overhead lighting.

Vex & Cave are stout yet elegant shades with tessellating 20 degree angled edges. Perfectly complementing one another these two shades work side by side, as dramatic tiered modular chandeliers or as single low illuminating light shades. The textile finish softens the light whilst the broad open base allows for maximum directional brightness.

The framework of all the pendant shades, which is made up of two simple metal rings to allow for flat packing, has been cleverly concealed by a double cloth layer, which runs up inside the pendant and is finished with an invisible hand stitched edge. By continuing the crochet inside the pendant, the form is refined and strengthened giving an architectural and highly sculpted finish. The inside double cloth layer also adds another colour option for an added dimension and subtle playfulness.

The pendants are all made using the signature mercerized cotton cord developed by the studio. The yarns are sourced from a family run textile mill in Italy & are knitted into a cable yarn in Yorkshire. All other components for the lights are sourced within the UK. The entire production process is UK based.
