Matali Crasset: Stick

During Euroluce 2013, Italian lighting manufacturer Fabbian presented the French designer's new collection of lamps: made of Ayous wood, Stick features a modular shape inspired by a pair of pliers.

French designer Matali Crasset created a new lighting collection for Italian lighting manufacturer Fabbian Illuminazione. Stick stems from an Ayous wood module, presenting a shape wvoking a pair of pliers, with two bent elements stretched by a central support. “This detail", states Crasset, "is what gives life to a lamp collection based on its repetition. While the texture of the wood permits diffusing a soft and warm light, the reiteration of the module creates an effect of unexpected graphics and shadows.”

This line of products develops by reinterpreting different types of lamps — floor lamps, wall lamps, suspension lamps and table lamps. It all starts with a single module which behaves like a pliant material: this way, the light source is covered and “tamed”, having a veiled light diffused from the smoothness of the wood.

“The goal we achieved", continues Crasset, "is having a light that enhances interiors thanks to the separate areas it creates by filtering, without fully delimiting, the spaces."

The collection consists of a table lamp, a wall lamp, four floor lamps and five suspension lamps featuring four different diffuser shapes. Light diffusion is by means of a frame decorated with Ayous wood strips and the lamp structure is in coated metal.  The pole of the floor lamps is in Toulipier wood or wholly in coated metal and the light bulb is energy saving.
