Peter Yong Ra: Kaji

Created during the young designer's senior year as a design student, this delicate teak wood and steel lamp seeks to shed light on the relationship between nature and industrialisation, acting as an appreciation of nature and the inspirations that progress from it.

Young designer Peter Yong Ra has completed the Kaji lamp, developed in his senior year as a student at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The teak wood and steel lamp seeks to act as an appreciation of nature and the inspirations that progress from it.

With Kaji (meaning "branch" in Korean), Yong Ra sought to shed light on the relationship between nature and industrialisation. "I wanted to stimulate the viewers understanding of one's dependency on materiality and form," he explains.

"By reversing the order of dependency in which industrialization could not be sustained without the support of nature, I wanted to highlight the significance our environment contributes to our everyday lives."

These ideas materialise in a lamp crafted from a steel tube, which according to the designer simbolises industrialisation, and a teak wood fork which supports it, which seeks to symbolise nature. The steel tube is bent at each end, creating the legs and housing the lightbulb. The electrical chord is seamlessly integrated inside the steel base.
