Delirium Café

Young Spanish architecture studio BABELspace has designed a multifunctional gallery space in Bilbao. The Delirium Café is located in an old factory of the Ribera de Deusto postindustrial neighbourhood, and is run by animation studio Delirium Studios. The café was conceived as a meeting place to share ideas and projects and will host diverse activities, ranging from exhibitions and workshops, to projections and conferences.

Working with a small space and a with a wide variety of space uses, the architects determined an expandable, flexible space. The usable wall surface has been doubled, using a system of rotating panels that can be positioned in various configurations.

Simultaneously, all the furniture is free standing, which allows it to be easily moved. Previously existing lighting in the ceiling was maintained, and a series of spotlights were added to the movable walls, which can be oriented according to the exhibition display.

"An important issue in the design process has been the decision to use industrial materials," state BABELspace, pointing out how this permits to evoke the industrial building's former nature, while simultaneously reducing the architectural impact, by allowing "the soul of the building" to remain visible.
