"Architects and designers are forever reinventing interior furniture, yet the design of outdoor furniture has been rather neglected and seen as the poor relation. CAST 001 is an opportunity to change that", explains Mackereth, "Just as interior furniture compliments the rooms that it inhabits – CAST 001 makes a sublime contribution to the landscape in which it is placed."
Formed in reconstructed stone, the collection features a selection of three cast finishes: Shagreen, Wood and Plastic-Wrap in a choice of metallic hues: Bronze, Silver and Old Gold. Included in the range set to be displayed at Salone are a table and stools which have the shagreen texture and bronze patinated finish resulting in an overall metallic sheen.
Using a particular moulding process perfected by Stevensons of Norwich, the surface texture of the shagreen creates an intriguing quality that throws into question the material being used such is the manner in which it bears similarities to metal, stone and concrete. The Clean lines in conjunction with this strong material allow CAST 001 to "sit in a formal garden or natural landscape like a piece of sculpture" according to Mackereth. The furniture will be presented as part of Tom Dixon's MOST at Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnica.
