Project Bus Shelter

Aberrant architecture's extension project for the Oriel Myrddin Gallery extends its footprint into the surrounding public space.

"Project Bus Shelter" is aberrant architecture's winning entry for the Oriel Myrddin Art Gallery in Camarthen, South Wales. The design proposes a new flexible studio space and storefront, exploring the potential of a narrow urban infill site, located adjacent to the main façade of the gallery and currently occupied by a disused bus stop.

The winning flexible working space can be used for educational activities, community programmes, gallery functions and artist residencies. A 'saw tooth' roof, echoing the factories once typical of the surrounding area, will provide north light to the creative production that will occur within the new building.

Two retractable canopies reference historical Carmarthen store fronts. When these are fully extended and the floor-to-ceiling glass retractable doors are opened out, the store front embraces the public space outside, inviting in patrons and passers-by for events, lectures and temporary art works.

The use of brick pays homage to the galleries existing façade by George Morgan. It creates a unified proposal that is distinctive amongst the predominantly rendered built fabric of Carmarthen. The design also incorporates a bespoke mobile residency desk, which enables an artist in residence to temporarily inhabit various spaces in and around the main gallery for different events and activities.
The chosen project will now be developed in conjunction with Oriel Myrddin Gallery, external stakeholders and the local community.
