July–August

Domus Germany, July–August 2017
In this issue of Domus Germany, we want to devote ourselves to the built manifestation of the faith and present various types of sacred buildings.

For example, we present the initiative of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany, which has called for ideas for new possibilities of use in the face of the many resettled churches. 500 ideas have come together and are now being exhibited in Erfurt. Up to five proposals are to be implemented by the end of the IBA-Thuringia-Year 2023.

With the construction of the central mosque of the Turkish-Islamic Union in Cologne, a process has come to an end after decades, which was not always easy and is repeated chronologically in this issue. The architect Paul Böhm, the youngest son of the Pritzker prize-winner Gottfried Böhm and grandson of Dominikus Böhm, probably the most important church builder of early modernity in Germany, has architecturally converted the mosque into the present with his transparent dome construction. Individual wall panels alternate with large glass surfaces, and the entire complex is open to the public by large stairs.

The reconstruction of the Five Dragon Temple in Ruicheng City in China was accompanied by strong opposition. The conflict was that the Chinese population could not identify with the design language of the project. The design of the temple was too much an adaptation to Western aesthetics. A detailed comment following the presentation of the project attempts to get the arguments from both sides.

In addition, the German domus visited the new old cultural palace in Dresden. The construction is regarded as an outstanding example of the GDR modernity and after heated discussions received the approval for its preservation. Now gmp architects have rehabilitated the cultural palace and equipped the interior with a new concert hall. Thanks to its prominent location in the middle of the city and its public potential, such as the library, it will continue to be a building for the population.
