Comprising an assemblage of kinetic installations produced by repurposing discarded household and electronic gadgets, and doubling as part-laboratory, Bombay-based artist Kausik Mukhopadhyay narrates a fascinating account of the animism of the machine. The motifs of interiority and embodiment, and the diffused feminist aesthetics of the counter-spectacle and performative resistance are explored through the works of artist Sonia Khurana.

While a feature on the pressing concerns of housing in the city of Bombay attempts to document, probe and analyse the urgent questions of space organisation, availability of infrastructure, and the concerns of the larger community, a proposal for the design overhaul of the city’s Maharashtra Nature Park tries to balance both accessibility and infrastructure without compromising on the thriving biodiversity of the green lung.

Furthermore, two essays attempt to articulate the state of architectural education in India, of practice, and subsequently the ability and necessity to develop a critical bent of mind.

In the section on ‘projects’, the Ahmedabad-based firm of Apurva Amin Architects transform the Nirma Vidyavihar structure’s conservative design into an elegant series of forms and spaces, interlaced with a dominant visual texture, cladding details and relief treatment, defining the bold nature of an institutional environment.
