One realises that with the changing forms and conditions of architectural practices, the structure and style or critical reading and reviewing would also change. What is the nature of this change? Not explicitly clear yet, and the pages of this magazine, month after month have experimented with, and explored this issue. One major shift that has clearly emerged is a shift from critical reviews to critical readings.
While the cover story focussed on narrating the journey of the Indian typewriter from the 1950s to the end of the last century, the feature on ‘7000 Museums: a Project for the Republic of India’ highlighted a series of watercolours by artist Atul Dodiya through a humourous construction of mock museums, and the role of art and architecture, design and patronage, in connecting intellectual practices to the viewing experience. Thirdspace Architecture Studio’s exemplary renewal of a heritage structure housing the Centenary Museum of the KLE Society in Belgaum is an exercise in sensitivity and pragmatism in architecture, and a project by Studio Advaita lays emphases on the use of modest, sustainable material to create a distinctly designed yet familiar space for a community, thereby enabling social equity.
