Domus Sri Lanka, January–February 2017
This issue of Domus deals with a number of unique subjects. In the Feedback section is featured a suburb of Colombo that has a fascinating architectural history: Colombo 2 or Slave Island.

It is a microcosm of the city of Colombo itself. It represents the city’s transformation from the times of the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonisers, the advent of various religions and finally the influence of present day architecture. It is a landscape that has transformed with time.

Also featured is the project of the CDB bank and corporate office by Shayan Kumaradas, a modern building in bustling Maradana. The architect has created an oasis within which clients and staff can work together seamlessly. The design adds a personal touch seeking to emulate the theme that the bank is one that caters to individuals and not just corporates. While its facade is a fresh and modern inclusion to the unrefined urban landscape of Maradana, the interior personifies the emotions of care and understanding.

The project of Sigiriya Jungles by Vinod Jayasinghe too demonstrates the connection between landscape and design. With the historic rock fortress as a backdrop, the design draws from ancient architecture. Sigiriya, the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura and the wooden Bogoda bridge re-emerge in this design. It is interesting to note that many hotels and structures have chosen to embrace the influence the rock fortress and camouflage the rough terrain. Despite modern facilities dominating the interiors, the design of the exterior builds on ancient aesthetics and principles.

Also included is the construction of the IJhal in Amsterdam, an extension added to the 19th Century train station to accommodate the city’s population and increasing number of tourists. In Confetti we take a look at Jean Nouvel’s furnishing designs where he speaks about the important social role of design. A Way of Working narrates the story of Tullio Pericoli, where the illustrator talks about his life’s experiences.
