How to differentiate being creative from fancy? Why the public often feel the other way from design competition results, expert critic or international awards? Are common reference-loaded essays on architecture insights or over says? Are masters’ definitions really the very essence of architecture to follow or admire so much? The core of these questions brings us back to the issue of reading architecture, and in wider scope, to the question, “how do we read the world?”

In the June issue of Domus China, Mr. Derek Chiu, the lead co-founder of WITH-IN Architects Ltd, who has an array of experiences in research and realization of architectural projects in the Asia-Pacific, gives us a solution through his essay Construct, analyzing the factors that influence us on how we perceive and interpret architectural works in our life.

With this in mind, new opinions and feelings may be generated by readers when they come across the other enlightening writings related to design and products. Konstantin Grcic has provided an opportunity to ask about his latest product and other chairs, a furniture type of particular importance to him. Kim Colin and Sam Hecht, under the name of the Industrial Facility studio, also tell us about their approach to design furniture and how they are inspired by the informal atmosphere of sharing. Denise Archiutti here gives an overview of a one-year project that offered over 100 students in Treviso direct experience with the industrial production of furniture.

The June issue also features a series of great exhibitions including the "Nilufar Brazilian Design" by Nina Yashar, with a sumptuous catalogue sheds light on the work of five exceptional Brazilian craftsmen from 1945 to 1970, as well as the retrospective "17 Screens", "Rêveries urbaines" and "Kiosque", through which Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec tell about their vision of design. We also present the teaching activities led by Wang Shu in School of Architecture in Hangzhou since 2001, in which he trains students in the technical and practical principles of the profession.
