Domus China 093, December 2014
The editorial of the December issue deals with Interaction as the way to unmask the symbiosis of societal culture and capital behind architecture, art, and design.

Among the projects of this month, the Cattle Back Mountain Volunteer House, designed by dEEP Architects, more than an architecture that employs the advanced digital design approach and local high-performance wooden bamboo, is a practical attempt that integrates all modern concepts and techniques to explore how to interact with the rural construction in China; the extension of the Glasgow School of Art designed by Steven Holl is constructed around the theme of light; the Friendship Centre in Gaibandha, Bangladesh, applies site morphology and local materials to the domestic and public life by Kashef Chowdhury; a slim apartment building designed by Buchner Bründler Architekten is strongly shaped by the use of materials and the details of some of Luigi Caccia Dominioni’s buildings that have become immaculate examples of good building practice.

December issue features the Top-talk with Weng Ling, the founder of Beijing Center for the Arts, who treats art as a substantial power to transform Chinese society, which is demonstrated in the exhibition Cheng Nan Project – Qianmen East Area 2014, introducing a pattern that aims at old cities’ revitalization with all the cross-border and interactional powers by art institution.

The school of this month is the Porto School of Architecture that engages the challenges of transformation based on the continuity of masters such as Távora and Siza; while at the Industrial Design Department of ECAL, Tomas Kral develops concrete ideas in collaboration with international companies and institutions.

In the column of A Century of China’s Industrial Design, Domus China introduces the Chinese accessories from its historical development process to the diversified design of function, form and connotation of today.

The feedback leads us to Xavier Vendrell’s Chicago, a city full of surprises. He offers the readers a wonderful journey, a detailed guidance. This is a city people don’t need a map and never get lost.
