John Pawson for Marks & Spencer

The British chain Marks & Spencer is inaugurating its first ‘Lifestore’, a shop devoted entirely to furnishings that will occupy 6,500 square metres on the outskirts of Gateshead in Northern England. Although from the outside, the anonymous industrial shed leaves little to the imagination, the store’s interior holds some surprises.

In fact, Vittorio Radice, M&S manager and former director of the Selfridges Group, called in John Pawson to design the space. The main ‘attraction’ will be a full two-storey house designed by the British architect and erected inside the store. Planned cost to the public: £50,000. Perhaps it will be the first in a collection of signature ‘DIY’ homes. E.S.
