Video: Leo

Exclusive for domusweb the video by De Serio brothers shown at Castello di Rivoli

Leo by the De Serio brothers is based on prison legend. It tells of how if a butterfly lands in the cell of a prisoner, he will shortly be set free. In the video, Leo, as their friend is called, an ex-prisoner and leading character in the story, tells the tale of his liberation. And of the butterfly that landed on him. It is a metaphor of the enclosed space of the cell and the breaking away from this space, the desire of every prisoner that cannot ever be suppressed. In this broader sense, the De Serios notion is connected to that possible break from physical space present in many of the works by Gianni Colombo.
The work of the two young well-educated filmmakers, who like many young contemporary creatives frequently cross over disciplinary boundaries, is characterised by the way it addresses the stories of people with uncertain and fluctuating identities. Uncertainty is a given reality when it comes to immigrants and the marginalised, subjects of many of their works. Uncertain identity is however also a condition that comes as second nature to human beings: each of us is in continual transformation. The video Leo , a homage to Gianni Colombo, was presented at the Castello di Rivoli museum of contemporary art along with a selection of some of Gianni Colombo’s favourite films, those that have contributed to constructing his world of images. The series, curated by the De Serio brothers, appears alongside the exhibition and also includes some of their own works. Not to be missed.
