The Eye of the Storm. Daniel Buren is back at Guggenheim

After 35 years, Daniel Buren returns to the Guggenheim in New York where in 1971 he was at the centre of some controversy. On the eve of the sixth “International Exhibition”, his monumental installation Peinture-Sculpture was removed by the museum directors in response to protest from other artists taking part in the exhibition.

The French conceptual artist will not be showing his old work. “It would be in bad taste,” he stated in a press conference. With great attention paid to establishing a dialogue between his work and the context, he will be “taking over” Wright’s building with 8.5-centimetre wide white and coloured strips, his hallmark.

In the museum entrance an in situ installation Around the Corner will rise up from ground floor to the sixth ramp, while on the upper floors over twenty paintings will be on show (executed between 1966 and 1977) along with three new pieces created especially for the windows on the third and fourth floors.
