March 31, 2005 is the deadline for the presentation of projects in the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction competition. The geographical regions involved are Europe, North America, Latin America, the Middle East and Pacific Asia. Anyone working in the field of sustainable construction can participate – architects, designers, engineers and those involved in the subject. Three regional prizes and special recognition prizes will be awarded.

The winners of the three regional prizes will automatically qualify for the 2006 world competition. In all, the prize money totals two million dollars. The competition is being held by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, which was founded in Switzerland in 2003 with a view to promoting sustainable construction worldwide.

The foundation is an initiative by Holcim Ltd, a world leader in the manufacturing of construction cement, aggregates, concrete and services, with branches in more than 70 countries. For the Holcim Awards, the foundation started working with the best-known technical universities around the world; they helped draw up the criteria for sustainable construction and will lead the independent juries in the respective regions.
