Ma0/emmeazero
Massimo Ciuffini (Perugia, 1966), Ketty
Di Tardo (Bari, 1967), Alberto Iacovoni (Rome,
1966) and Luca La Torre (Monza, 1964) formed
the ma0/emmeazero architectural practice in
Rome in 1996. Their many projects include
the design of the “PLAY: il mondo dei videogames”
exhibition at Palazzo delle Esposizioni
in Rome.

MAB arquitectura
Floriana Marotta (1977) and Massimo
Basile (1976) studied architecture at Palermo
University and in Marseilles. They formed
MAB Arquitectura in Barcelona in 2004 focusing
mainly on urban regeneration via the
design of public space.

Mamostudio
Adi Purnomo studied architecture at Gadjah Mada
University in Yogyakarta. He established his own practice in
2000 and in 2002 won the Indonesian Institute of Architects’
Young Architects Award. Danny Wicaksono joined mamostudio
in 2006 after graduating from Trisakti University in Jakarta.
He is also one of the editors of JongArsitek!, an online architecture
magazine based in Indonesia.

Manthey Kula
Manthey Kula is an Oslo-based architecture practice
made up of Beate Hølmebakk (born 1963) and Per
Tamsen (born 1967). Their work includes both experimental
designs and commissioned work: the Pålsbu hydroelectric
generator is their first completed project. Hølmebakk
teaches at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Photo Isak Iversen.

Manuel , Rocha da Aires Mateus
Born in 1963 in Lisbon, Portugal, Manuel Rocha De Aires
Mateus graduated in architecture in 1986 from the UTL
in Lisbon (Universidade Técnica de Lisboa). He has worked
with Francisco Aires Mateus since 1988. In 2002 and 2005
he was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University’s Graduate
School of Design. Since 2001, Aires Mateus has taught at the
Architecture Academy in Mendrisio.

Manzini, Ezio
Ezio Manzini teaches industrial design at Milan
Polytechnic, INDACO department (Unità di Ricerca DISDesign
e Innovazione per la Sostenibilità). He specialises
in innovative processes for production and consumption
systems and, in the field of sustainable development, the
relationship between production strategies and the political
environment.

Marte, Bernhard, Stefan
The brothers Bernhard and Stefan Marte were born in
Dornbirn, Austria, respectively in 1966 and 1967. In 1993, they
founded their studio Marte.Marte Architekten in Weiler. They
have been included in a number of exhibitions, for example
in “Emerging Architecture 01” organised by the Architekturzentrum
in Vienna. Marte.Marte Architekten have won
various prizes, including the Österreichischer
Staatspreis für Architektur Industrie und Gewerbe.

Matharoo, Gurjit Singh
Born in Ajmer, Rajasthan, in 1966, Matharoo graduated
in architecture from the Centre for Environmental Planning
and Technology (CEPT), Ahmedabad. In 1991, he established
his firm Matharoo Associates in Ahmedabad, and began
teaching at CEPT. He is now a visiting faculty at the National
Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. His most important
works include the Ashwinikumar Crematorium, Surat, and the
Prathama Blood Centre, Ahmedabad.

Mauricio Rocha Taller de Arquitectura
Studio created in 1990 in Mexico City by Mauricio Rocha
Iturbide (born in 1965). Gabriela Carrillo Valadez and Francisco
Ortiz Orozco also collaborate with the offi ce. Current projects
include the school of plastic arts at the Universidad Autónoma
Benito Juárez in Oaxaca; the academic unit Fes Iztacala at
the Universitad Nacional Autónoma de México.

Mazzocchi, Maria Grazia
A graduate in philosophy, after gaining
a Master’s degree in journalism she contributed
to Domus from 1973 to 1981. In 1982 she
founded Domus Academy, Italy’s first postgraduate
school of Design and Fashion, and
has been its President ever since. She has
been a board member of Libri Scheiwiller and
Editoriale Domus, and CEO of the Telecom
Italia Interaction Design School. She has
published several books on contemporary
cultural changes.

McBride Charles Ryan
McBride Charles Ryan is a Melbourne-based architecture
practice specialising in residential building. It is run by
Rob McBride and Debbie Ryan, both of whom also teach at
Melbourne’s main universities. Their work has been exhibited
at the Venice Biennale.

Mcgetrick, Brendan
Brendan McGetrick is an independent writer, editor
and designer based in Beijing. His recent work includes
the books Becoming (Ivory Press, 2008) and MAD Dinner
(Actar, 2008), as well as Eat Up, a magazine about consumption
formatted as a tablecloth. Between 2002 and
2006, he was chief editor at the design offi ce AMO.

MDMA
Martine De Maeseneer Architects (MDMA) has been
involved in the practice, theory and teaching of architecture
for the last two decades. Two books have been published
to accompany individual exhibitions: The Indivisible
Space, Antwerp (1993) and Ideality-3-Lost, Brussels
(1997). Main projects include a housing and office scheme

Meier, Lina
After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 2007 with
a BA in Product Design, Lina Meier started her own company. A
graphic tendency runs through Meier’s designs and she always
aims to find the perfect combination of form, function and material.
She is now selling her products to design shops all over
Europe and has been selected as one on the designers to take
part in Wallpaper* Warrant at La Rinascente in Milan.

Menos é Mais Arquitectos
Menos é Mais Arquitectos Associados was created
in Oporto in 1992 by Cristina Guedes (Macau 1964) and
Francisco Vieira de Campos (Oporto 1962). Both graduated
from FAUP in 1991 and 1992 respectively. Cristina Guedes
worked with Álvaro Siza; Francisco Vieira de Campos
worked with Eduardo Souto Moura. They both lecture at the
Architecture Department of Lusíada University in Oporto.

Mike and Maaike
Founded by Maaike Evers (The Netherlands, 1971)
and Mike Simonian (Los Angeles, 1971), Mike and Maaike
is an industrial design studio based in San Francisco in
the US. Evers graduated from the Eindhoven Academy
of Industrial Design. Simonian studied at the Art Center
College of Design in Pasadena, California. Their clients
have included Belkin, blankblank, Coalesse, Council, Fritz
Hansen, Google, Steelcase and Xbox.

Miklavc, Jure
Born in 1970, Miklavc graduated in design from the Academy
of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 1986. He works as a product
designer with Barbara Šušteršic. Miklavc is the permanent
industrial designer for the entire range of Alpina ski and crosscountry
boots, and he is also an assistant tutor in the Industrial
Design Department at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana.

MMA Architects
The South African studio MMA Architects was founded
in 1995 by Mphethi Morojele, who was a lecturer at the School
of Architecture of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
In 1997 the practice expanded with the return
from exile of Gandhi Maseko (who graduated from Weimar)
and Luyanda Mpahlwa (a graduate of Berlin’s Technische
Universität). Gandhi Maseko left the practice in 2000 and
was replaced by Tunde Oluwa.

MODUS
Matteo Scagnol and Sandy Attia
formed MODUS architects in Bressanone
(Bolzano) in 2000. In 2009 their heating
plant in Bressanone won the Architettura Alto
Adige Prize. Current projects include a fourstorey
all-timber building and consultancy on
the Bressanone ringroad.

Morphogenesis
Morphogenesis was set up in Delhi in 1996 by Manit Rastogi and Sonali Rastogi (graduates of London’s Architectural Association). They were joined in 2000 by Vijay Dahiya (graduate of D.Y. Patil College of Engineering and Technology) and in 2002 by Sanjay Bhardwaj (graduate of New Delhi School of Planning and Architecture).

MOS
The American collective MOS is a group of architects,
designers and thinkers. Established in 2003, it is led by Michael
Meredith and Hilary Sample, who alternate professional
careers with university lecturing at Harvard and Yale. MOS
has won several awards including the New York Architectural
League’s best emerging practice in 2008 and the P.S.1/MoMA
Young Architects Award in 2009.

Motard, Alice
Born in 1978 in Paris, Motard graduated in history of art
from Paris and Berlin in 2002. From 2003 to 2006 she worked
in the educational departments of Palais de Tokyo and Le
Plateau/Frac Île-de-France in Paris. in 2008 she obtained a
Master’s degree in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal
College of Art, London. In September 2008, Motard was appointed
Deputy Director & Exhibitions Organiser of Raven
Row, a non-profit contemporary art centre in London.

Mutti & Architetti, M&A
Gianluigi Mutti graduated in architecture from
Milan Polytechnic. Suffering from the professional limitations
of his generation, he moved in other directions.
He launched the operation “Via Ventura”, described as a
“Milanese creativity theme park”. Gianluigi Mutti tragically
died in Valsesia in December 2007. Mutti & Architetti,
founded in 2000 with Marilena Magalotti and Piera Patera,
have pledged to continue his work.

MVRDV
MVRDV was set up in Rotterdam in 1993 by Winy Maas,
Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. The headquarters for the Public Broadcasting Company VPRO
and the WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam gave
them international acclaim. Current work in progress includes a television centre
for Zürich; a bank headquarters in Oslo; a central market hall
in Rotterdam; large-scale urban master plans in Oslo, Tirana
and a master plan for an eco-city in Logroño, Spain.
