April–May

Domus Sri Lanka, April–May 2016
Personal impressions make this field what it is. An architect or designer becomes an established name because of the impressions that people have on their work. Then, how much importance do we give to this ‘soft’ form of evaluation?

In 019 of Domus Sri Lanka we look at submerged architecture, essentially lost until the next period of drought where remnants of buildings from towns flooded for development, emerge. What remains is minuscule compared to the rich culture and life that prevailed. While giving way to development is not always a negative, it is important to ensure that the information of what was there is available and accessible freely.

The house designed by Sudesh Nanayakkara explores ideas of designing a house with minimum effect on the environment. The contemporary design has incorporated subtle ancient styles and earthy tones to create a structure that is camouflaged by the surroundings. In Sri Lankan architecture we are generally influenced by our heritage. Even in the most ‘modern’ designs you are bound to find at least a single element that reflects our past.

Feedback looks at the ancient Jetavana Monastery Complex in Anuradhapura. The focal point of this monastery complex, which covers approximately 80 hectares, is the Jetavana stupa, built in the 3rd Century by King Mahasen. When the Roman Empire fell in the fourth Century AD the stupa was the third tallest monument in the world, giving precedence only to the two tallest pyramids at Giza. Architectural and engineering ingenuity of ancient Sri Lanka continue to be a source of inspiration for new generations of architects.

In Domus Sri Lanka, we give the reader the opportunity to have their own ideas of the personalities and work that shaped the landscape of the world that we live in.
