Le Stanze del Vetro in Venice will tell the story of Murano artist Vittorio Zecchin and his collaboration with the historic glassworks Venini. “Vittorio Zecchin: transparent glass creations for Cappellin Venini” tells the story of the artist who became artistic director of the company then known as Cappellin Venini & C between 1921 and 1925.

The retrospective opens its doors during The Venice Glass Week in the permanent exhibition space set up in a former school residence on the Island of San Giorgio with the aim of putting glass back at the centre of attention on the international art scene. On display, a selection of the most representative masterpieces with the Venini signature designed by Vittorio Zecchin, from the Veronese vase inspired by the vase in Paolo Veronese’s Annunciation, today a symbol of the glassworks and still one of the company’s best-selling items, to the Libellula vase with its sweeping ethereal blown glass handles. The items selected by exhibition curator Marino Barovier have the sinuous lines of an amphora, the essential lines of a decanter or those of a trumpet bell.

Son of Murano glass workers, Vittorio Zecchin (1878–1947) breathed the air of the glass furnace since his early childhood. After studying at the Venice Academy, he turned to painting, coming into contact with the culture of the Mitteleuropean avant-garde. He took part in the great season of Ca’ Pesaro and later also developed an interest in the applied arts from embroidery to tapestry, but above all glass for which he had a particular passion and enthusiasm. Zecchin’s creations stand out from others designed at the time in their proportions and essential, classical lines.
