Nook flexible furniture

Andrea Pallarès designed a piece of furniture that features a bed, a coffee table, a sofa and a chaise lounge all in one, ideal for the ever smaller spaces we live in.

For his graduation project at the Royal College of Art in London, Andrea Pallarès designed Nook, a flexible furniture system that responds to the way dense cities are changing the way we use our ever decreasing domestic space. Nook combines sleeping, living, working and eating all in one small space.

The upholstered bed is both a space-dividing and space creating system. Composed of a bespoke bed frame, a pillow and duvet covers that become a backrest and an armrest, and three upholstered cushions that clip around the frame and act as space dividers, it is able to effortlessly switch between a sheltered and comfortable private corner and a social, open place.

By quickly and radically changing the perception of the space from intimate to social, Nook helps maximize the space-constrained homes’ capabilities to their full potential. Proving its multi-purpose versatility, it can boost single adults’ work-at-home scenarios to happen, as well as act as a catalyst for social engagement, providing the user with a living space that was lacking before. Nook’s pillow cover allows any standard sleeping pillow to turn into a comfortable armrest just by zipping itself into a roll. The cover is composed of two different textiles: cotton and wool blend. The cotton part, where the face leans against while sleeping, stays at the inside of the armrest once rolled. Hence, its intimacy is preserved. Similarly, nook’s duvet cover allows any standard duvet to turn into a comfortable backrest just by zipping itself into a roll.
When on sleeping mode, the cushions serve as space dividers, providing a way to create a nook. They hold tight to the bed frame thank to a system of magnets which is embedded with a metal structure. Conversely, when used on the living mode, they will cover the fitted sheet and provide the users with a more comfortable seat. Nook uses FEBRIK textiles, who sponsored the project.
