Odd Matter: Deposit

Is it possible to develop a material cycle, in which the previous can be absorbed in the next in such a way that it enriches the material? With Deposit Odd Matter answers this question.

Odd Matter, Deposit
Deposit is a reaction to the duality of increased speed in changing trends with a growing awareness and growing unease about material depletion, sustainability, renewability and the environment.
This duality form the basis for Odd Matter’s project.

On one side there is the idea that what we leave behind for the next generation should be in as good a state as we received it. Ultimately if possible an even better one. All materials we use and the objects we create move in cycles that extend beyond our own personal use.

On the other side the project is inspired by the natural phenomenon of depository rock formations. A system in which sand, a mineral or another material is encapsulated or layered into another. Creating complex mixes and textures, enriching the sediment.

A specific issue raised by the duality on how to produce and consume goods is that styles, taste, technology, needs and lifestyles change. What is working, useful or in style now might not be in five or ten years time. Therefore the question behind Deposit is: is it possible to develop a material cycle, in which the previous and the waste can be absorbed in the next in such a way that it enriches the material?

The three pieces show a material and a production system in which each piece is a progression of the previous. Proposing furniture that when placed in a cycle will, like rock formations, encrust and enrich itself over time. Creating the possibility to adapt and change with the needs and tastes of the time without depleting our resources and adding to our landfills.
