A wheelbarrow is better

With his latest design for Officinanove, Francesco Faccin indirectly invites us to consider our present lifestyle and focus on our basic needs during difficult times.

Meglio una carriola
“I was asked to design a chair, but this year I think there is a greater need for wheelbarrows”. In keeping with the spirit of the times in which we all need to concentrate on our functional needs and basic requirements, industrial designer Francesco Faccin has come up, in a quite ironic way, with Carry On, a simple, clean-shaped wheelbarrow for Officinanove, a wood and metal structure available in assorted colours. Instead of yet another chair, Faccin suggests it would be better to buy “a real wheelbarrow to use for working, made from just a few pieces for easy manufacturing”. The idea is to return to simple and functional things, centred around human beings, their physical strength and willpower.

As the name suggests, this object will enable us to “carry on” in difficult times such as those we are living in. While its presentation might appear something of a provocation, in reality we are presented with a well-designed, functional and versatile item.

Faccin’s own words best describe its features: “It is a ‘vehicle’ that uses human traction to transport all kinds of things: earth, manure, stones, bricks, sand, a child… It is a beautiful object that uses the lever, a simple but highly efficient physical principle that enables us to ‘lighten’ the load.”

The Carry On wheelbarrow is on sale at the Rossana Orlandi gallery in Milan.
