At least two levels of interpretation can act as a guide to a major exhibition that the Pinacoteca Agnelli in Turin is dedicating, from March 20, to the collection of Alexander von Vegesack, founder and director of the Vitra Design Museum. On one level is the observation of the extraordinary (in terms of both quantity and quality) objects that describe a century of design; on another is the biographical narration (closely intertwined with the objects) of a life journey, that of collector Von Vegesack, deeply linked to the materiality of the objects.

The eclectic collection, which began in the 1960s as a result of continual travels around the world, brings together early works by Thonet, furniture by Prouvé, Eames, Aalto and Mies van der Rohe, as well as pieces by contemporary designers such as Arad and the Campanas, alongside travel souvenirs from all over the world and a large volume of documentary material comprising books, catalogues, photographs and films. The exhibition, with its deliberately educational title “Discovering Design”, has been curated by Mathias Schwartz-Clauss and is organised in an initial biographical section and a further 22 sections displaying over 300 objects.
